Can someone explain to me the importance and benefit of conserving water?

Also, what does water quality have to do with this? I'm really unsure of the problem. Is it because drinkable water is relatively rare in different areas of the world? Or is it becuse it uses energy to produce drinkable water? Any comments are appreciated
